A Great Victory

“There will be no sadness in me because the Lord will help me” Isaiah 51:3. This month, millions of people around the world will be shaking with the emotions of football. It is illogical to say that there will be no sadness in a match where the stands will be divided, as each side will be supporting its team in a game where there will be a winner and a loser. Although the fans strongly support their team, often the results are not what they had hoped for. Sometimes when the game ends with a bad result, the fans even think about taking their disappointment and frustration out on the other team. This is not what you will be doing during the World Cup: this is how other people live.

Years ago, they played a game we could call “The game for life”. The first team was formed by Jesus. He had chosen twelve men to play with on the field, and to compete side by side with them in order to win. If they lost the game, it would mean death for everyone. To save not only their lives but the lives of those whom they loved, they had to play to win. Although it was a close game, in the minutes before the half time whistle there was an own goal: one of the twelve had sold out to the other team, following the enemy’s order to injure their star player. The eleven players who remained, frustrated and saddened by what had just happened, considered abandoning the game and waiting for execution day. Then suddenly came the surprising news that a miracle had occurred: their star player had revived and would still be playing with them on the field. This triumphant and victorious moment which their enemies thought would bring about a great conquest, was in fact a great defeat for their adversaries. The following was reported in the news about their star player: “Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” (Hebrews 2:14-15)

“Having cancelled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”
(Colossians 2:14-15) The interesting thing is that this triumph did not only benefit the players, but all people in general.

Think about the analogy I have just made about one of the greatest leaders in history: “What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:31-32).

If you have suffered a setback in life, remember: someone has already won the victory for you.
