Thanksgiving

Concejal_Clara_Lucia_Sandoval_Noviembre_2010
Last week people from all over celebrated Thanksgiving Day. I think it’s wonderful that there is a whole day dedicated to giving thanks, because everything that we are and have already is a reason to be grateful, first and foremost to God, our strength, our inspiration, our salvation, our All. Thank you, God, for who you are and for revealing your amazing love and mercy to us. Thank you to our families for inspiring us and being a refuge for us at all times. Thank you to our friends for making life more enjoyable…to our colleagues, for working alongside us…to our pastors, for devoting yourselves and leaving everything else to build and raise up our lives…

Actually I’d run out of space and still not manage to thank everyone. But, as this blog is about politics and government, I want to thank Pastor Claudia Rodríguez de Castellanos because, if it wasn’t for her, this blog wouldn’t exist, because politics wouldn’t even be part of our church’s vision. So, I’m taking the liberty to share something I wrote to Pastor Claudia when she was battling with her health. Sometimes we only show our love at difficult times or on special occasions, but today I want to challenge you to make every day Thanksgiving Day.

“Pastor, many times I’ve wanted to say various things to you. I realise that sometimes we don’t say what we ought to, and at other times we say what we ought not to. But this time I don’t want to remain silent. I want to show my deep admiration, gratitude and great appreciation.

Thank you for your example. Your example of faith, both a childlike faith but also a powerful, surprising and strong faith. Your example of love and devotion for God, for your family, for the church and for the nation. Your example of Beauty, which motivates us to reflect Christ as his princesses and ambassadors. Your example of authority: the authority of a woman who is always sweet and has the strength she needs to face challenges and lead a people.

Thank you for the Word. Nobody has impacted my life through the Word as much as you have. Each teaching you bring is a revelation from God which helps me believe, grow, dream, get back on track, and come back to the heart of Christianity free of religiosity and pretence.

Thank you for helping us to dream and to believe that it’s possible to see our nation changed and that it will be made possible through us. I have much more to thank you for, but I want to say a special thank you for the faith you’ve had in me, which has allowed me to conquer my fears, overcome difficulties and walk in victory.

Thank you for believing in me ever since I was really young and willingly participated in the challenges you set, not only in the ministry but also in politics, always confident of the great lady I was following...Thank you for never letting me down.

My desire is that I will never disappoint you but, instead, that I will be a good disciple, and even more, a good daughter, because there is still a long way to go and many victories, miracles and dreams to see fulfilled. My desire is to be there working alongside you. Thank you for letting me be close and, in that closeness, to receive direction, correction, and above all, encouragement and a model to follow.

In closing, I just want to take the words of Ruth to Naomi to show what is in my heart:

“Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.”

With much love.

“World Changers”

"They will be called reformers and world changers..." I was impacted by these words of Alberto Mottesi, along with 10 thousand others in a leader's encounter in the G12 Auditorium in Bogota.  It was definitely a very special time. This phrase challenges us to be part of the transformation of our country, to keep dreaming of a nation led by the principles and values of the word of God, and to take action to see them become a reality.

If we want to be true reformers and world changers we have to change the culture of our country. This is a great challenge. Culture is formed by the media, the arts, education, the church and the government, through which norms of conduct and thinking are established, which are then reflected in society.

That is where we have to impact, taking our place of authority in the world. In terms of politics, in some countries the challenge is to enter into politics, in others it is to grow. It is our responsibility, with the Anointing of government that has been imparted to us through Pastor Claudia Castellanos, to work to change the world, by leaving a mark - not our own, but God's. The mark God leaves is that which positively transforms every life and nation. It is time to shine and not to hide our light under a table while there is ignorance, darkness and confusion in our governments.

Our society has a double problem: they haven't found the truth and they need direction with leadership. As Mottesi the evangelist said: "...the task at hand is to challenge others to change..." I am daily faced with matters that are controversial, and with strong positions that differ from the Word. Many have wanted to use these places of authority to make room for what is legal, but is neither advisable, nor edifying, in order to distort the truth. But God has removed the fear of governing, and is raising up true representatives of Peace. The doors have been opened for those of us who have been called to work with Political integrity, to speak with authority, to argue diligently for truth and to confront our opponents intelligently.

Why not dream that the future presidents and mayors will be men and women who are born again, and that the majority of the congresses, assemblies and councils will be made up of Christians? We definitely have enough reasons to carry on fighting in order to leave our children a better country, a better tomorrow. Therefore, it is time for every one of us, as good citizens, to look to take part in politics and support these processes with responsibility, and with passion for our nation, for our generations... Get ready, you have been called to be a reformer and world changer!

Be The Light, Stand Up, Speed Up

As part of my work with communities, I met Dilia, a woman with a miraculous life story. She suffers from chronic diabetes and is insulin-dependent. She has undergone surgery many times due to a serious problem in her colon, forming scar tissue which covered her womb.

7 years ago she found out that she was pregnant, which according to the doctors put her at high risk and could result in death for her and her baby due to her health situation. When they carried out the ultrasound scan they found that the baby was blind and its spine had not developed. The only way out for the doctors was abortion: the baby was malformed and the mother was at high risk.

Despite all of these arguments that justified it, Dilia decided to trust God, to love and not to abort, and today Ángel Jesús is 6 years old. He is a healthy, happy boy who daily thanks God and his mum for the opportunity to live.

Whilst I see many cases like this, I also see the general pro-abortion outlook in the world and it is painful. The practice of abortion is not allowed in many countries except in circumstances, such as: saving the mother's life; malformation of the baby; or in cases of rape etc. However other countries such as Uruguay have been much more lax to the point of allowing "economic problems" reason to abort the life of the baby can ultimately be ended depending on a set sum of money.

The different positions of our nations leave us with two great challenges. Firstly people with pro-life world view must stand up in our nations and be involved in decisions the country makes, as part of the political process, the courts; the government. We need missionaries, who with preparation and ability represent the feelings of the Christian people.
For me as a political leader, along with my colleagues, when we hear this voice it is a great advance, however, we need many more Christian to be ‘salt and light’ in every place where decisions are made which determines the present and the future of our societies.

I encourage you to discover this call to influence public life and to prepare yourself. Be brave to go beyond the church to the places of government, with the purpose of redeeming a nation. Fight the battle for our generation, a battle with the conscience and heart. Represent those like you and I, who are convinced that the decision to give life or to deny life does not belong to human beings.

The second challenge is to continue with our evangelistic mission, to continue growing as churches. Reaching the heart of the multitudes so as to teach them, in light of God's Word, the value of this defenseless human. We must continue to form young leaders, our future leading-figures in society, so that they will know in their mind and in their heart, that the only option that can exist is life and that they should prepare themselves to defend it.

Transforming Nations

luisaleyvadelrio

Three months ago I had the opportunity to have lunch with Doctor Alberto Motessi, known in America as “the Pastor of Presidents.” That day I discovered a lot of his opinions, but that which impacted me the most was the following: “The multitudes don’t change countries; nations are transformed when the church decides to influence in the governments.”

And he’s absolutely right. Now is the time when God wants to give us the two branches: ministerial fruit, the anointing for growth and the multitudes; but also, political fruit. In other words, the anointing to protect the nation from the publicly. We don’t need to do Bible studies to know whether God agrees or not, put simply he does not love injustice, corruption, hoarding of grain, or bribery. His own people Israel experienced this. Every time the political leaders lost the divine north, the people paid the price.

God is calling us to make ourselves uncomfortable, to go out of our churches and to take part, as that’s what politics is: to participate. To participate in the School board of your children, to participate in the administrative decisions in the block of flats you’re living in, to participate in the student councils. He leads us to speak and be part of the decisions that will be taken and that will directly affect our children and our daily activities.

It is sad to see how nations that were born based on the Word of God, that experienced the prosperity and development that God promises to the peoples who seek Him, can no longer speak about the Lord, how in order to hold on to their place within the Congresses, Assemblies and Governments they now have to resign themselves to atheistic education, with principles that, in the interests of a false freedom, call what is good bad and what is bad good.

I don’t want this for my children or for my nation. I want everyone to know the love of God; but I also want there to be justice, prosperity and freedom. I want them to be able to shout to the four winds that they are Christians, and for them to receive an education that God is present in. I want them to continue believing that although everyone is free to decide how to live their life; their nation is based on principles from the Holy Scriptures.
Dear friends, it is time to transform nations, to be able to give a social response to our cities and nations and to show that to be a good Christian means to be a good citizen.

Standing for social renewal

jamesrichards
Christians and churches engaging in politics have a unique opportunity to stand for the transformation of the nations and the renewal of society. Too often plans for social renewal have been restricted to modes of philosophical and political thinking and theorising.  However the idea of ‘social renewal’ has a long history with its historical roots stretching back to the events and times recorded in the Bible.

The Hebrew prophets of the Old Testament always challenged unjust social structures because they viewed Yahweh as the God who had liberated slaves from bondage and entered into a covenant with them.  To the prophets, God was the liberator of slaves and the champion of the poor and oppressed and therefore deeply concerned about social transformation. They believed that that the way the nation was structured and governed reflected its commitments, values and morality.  They believed citizens had civic rights and responsibilities and that the wellbeing of society depended on fulfilling these properly.  Their beliefs had profound economic implications emulating God’s “concern for the poor, oppressed, widows, orphans and other victims of society.” To the prophets, social righteousness or justice was the barometer of the health of society.

Luke’s gospel (4:19) demonstrates Jesus’ vision for social renewal and hope for a transformed world. Jesus identified His mission from the outset as good news to the poor, freedom for the prisoners, healing for the blind, release for the oppressed and the announcing of a time in which the renewal of society as a whole is put into effect.

Jesus’ example challenges how Christian leaders should approach the world of politics and government.  He turned social relations upside down seeking to re-establish them in the context of kingdom dynamics.  He modelled this in His own interpersonal relations and in His relationship with His disciples - God the King of creation enjoying personal relationships with everyday ‘ordinary’ people.

Throughout the gospels Jesus models his commitment to the wholeness of the individual and to their freedom from various forms of bondage that destroy the quality of life God intended.   In his book on Christianity & Democracy, De Gruchy, a political academic, says that Jesus liberated “people from the bondage of dehumanizing powers, and enabled them to discover their God-given dignity, just as He also empowered them to live life more responsibly for others.”

Jesus strongly challenged social and economic injustices, as evident in His teaching on wealth and poverty.  His standard confronted the religious and political authorities of the day (notably those who controlled the temple finances in Jerusalem) leading to His crucifixion - "a death brought about by religious interests, political complicity and populist demands.”

Also from the early days of the Christian church or ekklēsia, Christians sought to model themselves on the example of Jesus and formed a radical community that placed high value on social transformation (Acts 2:42-47).  The early church saw itself as a universal community embodied in local congregations comprised of people from every segment of society. Together they took up the mission of Jesus standing for liberation, healing, justice and equity.

The Biblical vision for transformation and renewal has profound implications for Christian leaders in politics and government as it provides guidance and direction in how to approach this complex and compromised arena.

It provides insight into the motivation that is needed and provides the framework to decide how constitutions should be designed, social structures shaped and economies organised.   It empowers today’s leaders to step into politics and government as salt and light in the stand for social renewal and the transformation of the nations.
