Luis Marrero, better known as “Funky," is today identified as one of the main exponents of Christian reggaeton, with four albums and multiple projects in production. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in January 23, 1974. In the year 1998 he had a personal encounter with Jesus, which brought personal and family restoration to his life. After his experience with Jesus came his first job as a singer and producer "Funky town" which was a success in the music world. The media in his home country, Puerto Rico, and the international media welcomed him a huge way, making him one of the favorites among the youth. In less than one year in the Christian music scene, Funky received the nomination for Latin Grammy in 2003.
The album “Especie en Peligro” (Endangered species) was produced in 2002, which consolidated the position of Funky as a musical influence among the Christian youth. With this album Funky was awarded different nominations and prizes: prize ARPA( Mexico, 2003 and 2004), Conquer prize LA (California 2004), Integrity (integridad.com) prize (2004) and the People prize (California, 2004), as well as many others.
The year 2005 saw the launch of his first live production:«Live! En vivo desde Costa Rica» ("Live! from Costa Rica"), that reaffirmed his role as a leader of Chrisian reggaeton on an international level. In 2006 he gave his first tour around Europe for 17 days, held more than 25 concerts in Mexico, visited Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Panama and the USA, among many other places.
In 2007 and after more than two years of waiting for a studio album, Funky launched “Corriendo para ganar” (Running to Win) which he produced with the participation of figures such as Domingo Quiñones, Alex Campos and Tony Vega. The first track on the album, "Me estás matando" (You're killing me), placed him in various TV music channels such as Univision, MTV espanol, MTV latinoamerica, VH 1, HTV and numerous others, being the pioneer in the Spanish Christian world and the only one of his kind getting such exposure.
Funky currently resides in Orlando, Florida, with his wife and kids, from where he directs the offices of Funkytown music Inc. and produces his own albums and those of several other reggaeton singers.
And so, as one of the best examples of Christian music in Latin America, he will be in our next youth conference We Are One 2010, in the city of Bogota (Colombia) from 15th to 18th September. Funky is an artist that, through his lyrics, is inviting young people to live with purpose for God.
